Germany woes continue as team seals worst run in 40 years

Joachim Low is under increasing pressure as Germany manager with Monday’s disappointing draw against Netherlands seeing his side reach their longest winning drought since 1978.

The 2014 World Cup winners looked to be cruising to their first ever Nations League victory on Monday against a Netherlands side that looked jaded from their exploits in last week’s 2-0 win over France.

First half goals from Timo Werner and Leroy Sane put Low’s side in control, only for Netherlands to snatch a dramatic draw after late strikes from Quincy Promes and Virgil van Dijk.

Germany have now gone five competitive matches without a win with two draws and two defeats, making this their longest winless run in forty years.

On top of that, they have managed just five goals in their last seven competitive matches, with Monday’s two-goal effort being only the third match the team has scored in since the start of the World Cup.

Low has been under pressure in his role at the helm of the German national side since their disastrous World Cup campaign which saw them crash out in the group stages having won the competition four years earlier.

However, in July, Low informed the German Football Association that he wanted to continue as manager and, in turn, he was told that he still remained the right man for the job.

But a collection of other underwhelming results since then will almost certainly have brought his future into question yet again.

Low, 58, has been in charge of Germany for 12 years, making him the longest serving manager of any of the current European national team coaches.

Monday’s draw with Netherlands is the last game that Germany will play this year, with their next fixture pencilled in for next March. It remains to be seen whether Low will still be in charge at that point.

Forward Thomas Muller reached a more positive landmark on Monday after making his 100th appearance for Germany, becoming just the 15th player to ever do so.

The Bayern Munich forward came off the bench with his side leading 2-0 in what looked set to be a successful night for both him and his country, before the Oranje struck back late on.
