The Olympics has always been a sight to behold for countless sports fans, featuring some of the most popular athletes in the world. From the mighty Team USA in men’s and women’s basketball to the European and South American powerhouses in football to the seasoned and rising stars of tennis, the two weeks of the Summer Games provide enthusiasts and bettors with a chance to watch teams and athletes compete for the coveted Olympic gold.
But for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, all eyes would be on one man looking to break the record for men’s marathon – Eliud Kipchoge. At 39, the Kenyan athlete will face the biggest challenge of his career, winning a third-consecutive gold medal in the event.
Past Olympic Runs
Kipchoge is no stranger to the pressure of the Olympics, having represented Kenya in the 2004 and 2008 editions but in the 5000m event, winning bronze and silver, respectively. However, since switching to the men’s marathon in 2013, he has become a standard in the men’s marathon in the Summer Games, and he is anticpated to make history in Paris on August 10.
Before the Rio Olympics, Kipchoge won 5-straight commercial marathons, making him the favourite to win the gold in Brazil. He made a move against fellow race leaders Feyisa Lilesa and Galen Rupp around 36km into the race, making the finishing gap between him and Lilesa 70 seconds.
His Tokyo Olympics run is also as impressive as it can be, with him actually making the definitive move earlier, at around 30km into the race, to become a 2-time men’s marathon champion. He also increased the finishing gap between him and the silver medalist to 80 seconds, the biggest margin in 49 years.
The Journey to Paris
The journey to qualify for the men’s marathon in the upcoming Paris 2024 is a challenging one. The World Athletics (formerly the IAAF) has made the entry standard to 2:08:10, with 70 athletes eligible to qualify by hitting this qualifying time (but they also need to be in the top three of their country) in approved marathon events between November 6, 2022 and May 5, 2024.
Kipchoge secured his spot on the Kenyan roster by finishing first in the Berlin Marathon last September 2023, crossing the finish line in 2:02:42. He also finished within the entry standard at the Tokyo Marathon earlier this year, but he finished in 10th place with 2:06:50.
Three-Peat in the City of Lights?
The expectations for Kipchoge to win three gold medals in the men’s marathon are at an all-time high, especially since this will cement his name as the greatest marathon runner in history. He is currently tied with Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia and Waldemar Cierpenski of Germany with two gold medals in the event.
Winning another one next month will make him the only athlete to take home three men’s marathon championships while doing it in consecutive Olympic marathons.
At 39, this might be Kipchoge’s last hurrah in the Olympics, and claiming gold will allow him to finish his Olympics run on a high note. The Kenyan is focused on actually winning the race and not breaking any time record, with winning the gold and making history being the priority for the all-time great.
Betting on Kipchoge in Paris 2024
Placing bets on marathon events is not really that popular among those engaged in online betting in Singapore and other parts of the world. However, Kipchoge’s recent result suggests that he is capable of winning it all, and bettors can definitely bet on him to become the world record holder of medals won in the men’s marathon event next month.
